Building Teams with your staff, volunteers, and other affiliates

Naomi Fein>>Fri Feb 26, 2010

I recently completed a course as part of my Community Leadership and Philanthropy MA program called "Human Resource Management for Multidisciplinary Organizations."  This class, of course, included reviewing literature on the typical responsibilities of a human resource department, such as hiring, firing and employee evaluation, however that was not the main focus of the class. This class, taught by Dr. Stephen G. Donshik, focused on the use of teams by organizations to best utilize the expertise and skills the human capital within an organization, has to offer.

At PresenTense we have Steering Committees; groups of people from different walks of life, who are employed by PresenTense, volunteers for PresenTense, and receive PresenTense services, that come together to serve the PresenTense community. These Steering Committees can be formed to run a PresenTense Fellowship, to coordinate, draft, edit, and publicize the magazine, to design and implement programs at PresenTense, and much more. The question is do these teams use the expertise and skills of the members to the extent which they could?!

It's that time of year again...

Naomi Fein>>Wed Feb 10, 2010

It has now been a few months since we released the first Year in Preview  of the PresenTense Group, in fact more then a quarter of the year has gone by. It is once again time for us undergo our quarterly review process, where we challenge ourselves to manage the operations with an eye on outputs and outcomes. We have once again reviewed what was done over the past quarter, learned lessons of what did not go as planned and why, and seen the successes of much of the PresenTense communities hard work. These quarterly reviews provide us the necessary data and the opportunity to make adjustments to the Year in Preview and what our plans our for the upcoming quarter.

Here is the second quarterly reports. As opposed to last quarter, this time we answered some specific questions such as:

  • What were the goals of the department
  • What assumptions were made
  • What content/programs were expected vs. what actually happened
  • What are we planning for the next quarter
  • What "unexpected's" took place
  • and more...

Of course what would PresenTense be without creativity? The presentations are still quite unique from each other, as a reflection of this crucial element of who we are!

So...here they are!
