Under Attack in a Virtual World

The largest challenge we face is not the racists — it is the online culture that accepts them and their message. This acceptance allows others, particularly the young, to be drawn to prejudice through their ignorance. It encourages good people to stand idly by, or risk the ire of the community for attempting to limit another’s “free expression”.

PresenTense on the Road

Aharon Horwitz>>Tue Mar 16, 2010

I'm on the road in North America for PresenTense, just having spent two days at the Orthodox Forum where I spoke about the Odyssey Years phenomenon and its implications for modern Orthodoxy. I'll post more about that once I assimilate the fascinating conversations that took place among a group of people whose Jewish learning and knowledge base was mind blowing. I tried to turn the conversation towards Modern Orthodoxy within a broader framework of Jewish purpose. More on that down the road.

Going Digital: Mega Jewish Nonprofits in the Online Sphere

Deborah Fishman>>Mon Mar 15, 2010

With all the buzz about Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and MySpace, social media are a hot topic. Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that 56 Jewish professionals and community members called in to last Wednesday’s call, “Going Digital: Mega Jewish Nonprofits in the Online Sphere.”  Though everyone is talking about – and, let’s be honest, may be a little intimidated by – this new technology, the lesson of the call was that it’s nothing more (or less) than one more tool to get the job done.

The Electronic Persona

Managing Identities Using Social Networks

I suspected that many young Jews have strong online personas that incorporate their Jewish identities, even when they're connected to non-Jews and friends from other communities... I wanted to find out if other young Jews use social networking sites in similar ways.

Friending the Holocaust

Bringing Henio Back to Life

The wall on Henio Zytomirski‘s Facebook page is filled with Chanukah menorahs and Christmas greetings. His stats say he has over 2,000 friends, and every day his popularity only increases. “Wow,” you might think. “Lucky guy.” But then, looking more closely, you realize that this is no ordinary profile. Henio was killed in Majdanek, a young Jewish victim of the Holocaust. His profile is where Holocaust remembrance meets the 21st century.

Portrait of an Artist

Fine Art Meets Blogspot.com

Photographer Adam Cohen’s latest project, a collaboration with writer Craig Friedman, blends imagery and words using Internet technology. Their blog, The New American Census, features photographs that capture elements of American culture.  The blog, subtitled “the first census to sense America,” was launched in December 2009 and Cohen and Friedman say the project aims to show life as it is, taking inspiration from the world. It encourages viewers to actively observe their surroundings and question--and struggle with--the images around them...

Face Time vs. Screen Time

Community Building in an Online World

I believe that the internet's greatest potential is to enable people to work together. There are examples everywhere of how the internet and tools like social networking are changing the rules. But this is only the beginning, and for us to truly realize the potential of a connected, collaborating world, there are more products to be invented and big problems to be solved.

Would You Like Some Chumus with That Poke?: Facebook Invades the Holy Land

Shimon Peres is a living legend—a founding father of the Jewish State. He arrived in Israel before the War of Independence, served in the Knesset, held numerous minister positions in the government, led Israel as both Prime Minister and President and has won the Nobel Peace Prize. And yet, he will forever be remembered as the man who just recently introduced Israel to…wait for it….“Bookface.”

Global Entrepreneurship Week- How should PresenTense get involved?

Brachie Sprung>>Wed Sep 16, 2009

For one week, millions of young people around the world will join a growing movement of entrepreneurial people, to generate new ideas and to seek better ways of doing things. Countries across six continents are coming together to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week, an initiative to inspire young people to embrace innovation, imagination and creativity. To think big. To turn their ideas into reality. To make their mark.

From 16 - 22 November 2009, Global Entrepreneurship Week will connect young people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators. Students, educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, employees, non-profit leaders, government officials and many others will participate in a range of activities, from online to face-to-face, and from large-scale competitions and events to intimate networking gatherings.

PresenTense is going to be a partner in Global Entrepreneurship Week, and were looking for ideas from our commuinity about the types of programs and events we should run at the Jerusalem Hub and around the world during this week.

We look forward to hearing your ideas and thoughts!

Please send your ideas and suggestions to Brachie Sprung at: brachiesprung@presetense.org
